Shelter Hat and Scarf

Free

Introducing our very simple hat and scarf set, designed to fit most adults comfortably. The hat features a classic ribbed pattern created on smaller needles, while the scarf is worked in a cozy garter stitch using larger needles. This easy knitting project is perfect for beginners and experienced knitters alike, as the gauge isn't critical; the ribbing ensures a flexible fit for a variety of head sizes. This delightful set utilizes a full cake of Caron Tea Cakes yarn, making it an economical and fun option for your next knitting endeavor.

As a community-focused initiative, I designed this hat and scarf set to help homeless men at my church, and I’m pleased to offer it for free. I hope it inspires others to create and donate warm accessories to those in need. Additionally, I made some hats this past year (2019) using Bernat Softee Chunky yarn. One ball of solid color yarn is sufficient to make a hat with some leftover material, while some ombre balls may produce a complete hat, though others might require some extra yarn from leftovers. If you opt for a multicolor yarn, consider knitting a few rows shorter before starting the shaping to ensure you have enough yarn. Thanks to the leftover solid color yarn, I successfully crafted 18 hats along with a smaller one using just 14 balls of yarn.

This knitting pattern is a wonderful way to create warm and stylish accessories that can be donated to charity or gifted to friends and family. Give it a try and spread warmth and kindness one stitch at a time!
