Beacon Hill
This exquisite knitting design originated from a unique stitch pattern rather than a traditional garment concept. During my creative exploration, I experimented with a combination of stitches to craft a fabric that evokes the enchanting raindrops of our beloved West Coast winters. This initial inspiration transformed into what is now the published Wellington hat. After seeing the delightful raindrop pattern, Amanda and Fiona encouraged me to design a full garment that showcases this beautiful stitch.
With this in mind, I set out to create a cozy, grandfather-style cardigan that features a lengthy body and sleeves—perfect for snuggling into and enjoying all day long. By pairing this inviting silhouette with the luminous qualities of Sweet Fiber’s stunning neutral colorway, Paper Birch, I was able to produce a finished garment that truly shimmers, reminiscent of raindrops glistening in the light.
Materials Needed for the Raindrop Cardigan
For this elegant garment, you will need Sweet Fiber Merino Twist Worsted yarn, which is made from 100% superwash merino wool. Each skein contains 200 yards (183 meters) and weighs 115 grams. Depending on the size you are creating, you will require 6 (7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 10) skeins of this lovely yarn in the color Paper Birch.
To ensure you achieve the correct gauge for this cardigan, you will need a 32-inch circular needle in US size #6 (4mm) or a size that meets your personal gauge preferences. Additionally, have on hand one set of US size #6 (4mm) double-point needles or your preferred method for knitting small circumference areas.
