The area of the afghan is precisely one square metre (it's important to note that this does not imply it is a one metre square). This charming afghan is crafted from four beautifully stitched rectangles, each showcasing a distinct size of paper. One of the featured photographs illustrates the exquisite A3 and A4 sheets elegantly arranged upon the afghan, adding a delightful visual contrast.

To prevent large, monotonous blocks of color, I chose to create this afghan with multiple rectangles, resulting in intriguing color illusions by reversing the hues in two of the rectangles. This thoughtful design approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also adds a unique flair to your home decor.

The construction technique for this afghan resembles the popular log cabin style, making it an accessible project for knitters of all skill levels. If you’re not located in Europe, you might not be familiar with the enchanting properties of metric-sized paper. No matter the initial size of the paper you start with, folding a sheet will yield a new rectangle that retains the same shape as the original but with half the area. In Europe, the standard paper size used for everyday applications is known as A4.

Interestingly, if you multiply the length of one side of an A4 sheet by the square root of 2 (approximately 1.4), you will obtain the length of the other side, ensuring that each rectangle harmonizes beautifully with the others in the afghan. This knitting pattern not only allows you to create a stunning piece but also invites you to explore the fascinating world of metric paper sizes intertwined with your crafting experience.
